Poker Face

[ English ]

Do you ever receive that itch? The itch to wager, to head to the nearest betting house, to come across a great stakes game of Hold em, to sit at a Blackjack table for hours on end. I like that itch. And I like to scratch it.

I also love to watch individuals bet. No two poker faces seem the same. When I bet I like to believe I put on a poker face which is impenetrable. Except I know I’ve particular gestures. For 1, the only time I smoke is when I wager on poker or Black jack. And then I chain smoke. Except I smoke whether I am winning or losing, no matter if I have a very good hand or bad.

I once wagered in a weekly poker game. The game was generally five card draw. There was a gentleman who wagered with us each and every week who generally wore a hat. When he was given a great hand, unconsciously, he would begin touching and playing with his hat. Needless to say, he never won.

The greatest poker player I ever saw was a man who manufactured a lot more movements and gestures at a poker table than anyone I had ever seen. He was flawless in the way he dressed. Generally an high priced suit and tie, shoes shined and nails manicured. He was diligent in this manner. And he was always brushing his pants or holding his hands or putting his chips in tidy little piles.

I use to analyze him for hours. I’d attempt to see if I could spot his tell. Choosing fuzz off his shirt- did this mean he was bluffing? Stacking his chips in a very short pile – did this mean he had a excellent hand?

Many years later I bumped into him in the bar in Philly and we had a drink. I asked him if he were aware of all those activities he produced or if they had been subconscious. He told me that every single individual thing he did at a poker table was intentional. He said that everybody is often checking out everyone else’s poker face. They’re trying to spot the the tell.

So his program was to provide them lots to assume about. His thinking was if they had been thinking about him picking a piece of fuzz off his vest and what it meant they sure were not pondering about their cards.

His process was diversion. And it worked for him. Never give up a method that works for you.
