He would tell his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil did not permit the adverse feedback from other people kill his ambition of becoming one of the best poker players in the world.

Phil started competing seriously after acquiring a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He practiced his abilities at the casinos in Atlantic City. The initial few years for Phil were a teaching period and winning was not a common outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he made 2 final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the closing table he defeated quite a few of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He made a decision to take his game to the successive level and moved out west to Sin City. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Ivey credits his achievements to dedication and an eternal passion for poker. Phil says that he’s learning every single day and is very humble about his achievements. Phil knows he makes errors in each session of poker and constantly aspires to improve.

Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some big tournaments, he likes destroying cash games on a normal basis.
