Gus Hansen experienced a wonderful year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only participant to make it to the last game in three of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on The Game Show Network where he paid $400, 000 to play. You may remember one of the biggest pots in high stakes poker history up against Daniel Negreanu. Gus raked in a big pot with 4 of a kind against Daniel’s full house. Hansen has made many televised poker appearances and is thought to be one of the best gamblers around the world. While participating in online poker, another side of Hansen has emerged. He regularly competes in the 200/400 NL max buy-in of Forty Thousand dollars. Gus generally buys in for the minimum of $16, 000 and gambles very poorly. He sits there waiting for a decent hand and then pushes all-in. I believe Gus is a great poker player but not even close to the familiar players at 200/400no limit. Unless he is flat broke, he has little or no reason to settle at the game with the min buy in.

Buying in for the min takes almost all of the expertise out of big stack poker. Gus is presumed to be one of the greatest poker players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy-in for the total amount. I think television can alter our perception of the real world at times. The greatest players in the world might just be players you have won’t have heard of before.
