Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he enjoyed betting on different card games when he was young. He made some extra cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He judged he could improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. The definite improvement in his skills happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would regularly challenge one another. Howard was able to access some of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his cunning thinking abilities. Howard used these strategy ideas in the game of NL holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. He told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker world today. Howard relocated to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
